BJP Attacks TMC After 3 Sadhus Are Assaulted, Calling It “Palghar-Like Lynching” “Crime to be Hindu in Bengal”

A political controversy has arisen after reports that a crowd in West Bengal’s Purulia area undressed and physically abused a number of sadhus, or seers. Three sadhus from Uttar Pradesh who were traveling to the Gangasagar Mela in West Bengal were allegedly shown being assaulted and undressed by a crowd in a video that leaked on Friday.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sharply condemned the governing Trinamool Congress (TMC) for the assault and likened it to the 2020 Palghar mob lynching.

Chief of the BJP IT cell Amit Malviya posted the video on his official X account and said that Sadhus’ attack was carried out by thugs associated with the governing TMC.

“A terrible occurrence from Purulia, West Bengal, has been reported. Offenders connected to the governing TMC stripped and thrashed sadhus traveling to Gangasagar for Makar Sankranti. Malviya contributed to X.

He said, “Under Mamata Banerjee’s regime, a terrorist like Shahjahan Sheikh gets state protection and sadhus are being lynched,” asserting that it was illegal for a Hindu to live in West Bengal.

Sukanta Majumdar, the head of the BJP’s West Bengal branch, also criticized the Mamata Banerjee-led government over the attack.

Sadhus traveling to Gangasagar were stripped and thrashed by TMC-affiliated criminals in a shocking Purulia episode that echoed the Palghar catastrophe. Mamata Banerjee’s regime protects terrorists like Shahjahan while sadhus are targeted for violence. In WB, it is illegal to be Hindu.

While conducting searches on the houses of TMC strongman and local panchayat leader Shahjahan Sheikh earlier this month in the Bengali area of North 24 Parganas, the ED detectives were ambushed by unidentified individuals.

Shehzad Poonawalla, the national spokesman for the BJP, further linked the event to the ED mob assault and said that West Bengal’s legal system had broken down.

The claims elicited no immediate response from the TMC.

REASON FOR THE ATTACK ON SADHUS
A guy and his two kids, who were sadhus, leased a car on Thursday to go to Gangasagar for the Makar Sankranti celebration. They claimed to be from Uttar Pradesh.

Three adolescent females in the neighborhood who they asked about the route from were suspicious of them, yelled, and fled. According to an India Today story, this led the villagers to accuse the sadhus of abduction and to capture and abuse them.

Local police intervened as the situation worsened and saved the sadhus.

2020 PALGHAR LYNCHING
Two Hindu sadhus and their driver were killed by a mob in Gadchinchale hamlet in Maharashtra’s Palghar district on April 16, 2020. Following a WhatsApp rumor about thieves operating in the region under the nationwide coronavirus lockdown, the crowd assaulted Sadhus’ vehicle. About a hundred people were taken into custody in relation to the lynching.
