Can Karti Chidambaram defeat Congress stronghold Sivaganga in the Lok Sabha Elections of 2024? View our evaluation

In the approaching Lok Sabha Elections of 2024, the Sivaganga Lok Sabha seat in Tamil Nadu is expected to see an intense three-way race including notable candidates from the BJP, Congress, and AIADMK. From this long-standing Congress bastion, Karti Chidambaram, the current MP and scion of the illustrious Chidambaram family, is running for a second term in the Lok Sabha.

Conversely, the BJP has nominated Devanathan Yadav, a businessman from Chennai who is well-known for owning the Tamil channel WinTv. Xavier Dass of the AIADMK depends on the appeal of the “two leaves” emblem, whereas Ezhilarasi of the NTK takes use of young people’s dissatisfaction with the Dravidian parties.

The assembly seats of Thirumayam, Alangudi, Karaikudi, Tirupattur, Sivagangai, and Manamadurai (separate) make up the Sivagangai Lok Sabha Constituency.

Sivaganga was won by Congress nine times.

Sivaganga is considered a Congress stronghold since, from 1980 and 2019, the national party won nine out of eleven elections. P Chidambaram, a senior Congressman and former Union Finance Minister, has seven victories in this seat. Each of DMK and AIADMK won twice.

In the 2019 general elections, the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance won a resounding victory in Tamil Nadu, with the Congress winning eight of the nine seats up for grabs, including Sivaganga.

In the most recent election in 2019, Karti Chidambaram ran for the DMK-Congress alliance in the Sivaganga seat. He received 5,66,104 votes, which gave him a margin of victory against BJP candidate H. Raja, who ran against him in the AIADMK alliance. Raja received just 2,33,860 votes. With an astounding 1,22,534 votes, V Pandi of the AMMK, headed by TTV Dhinakaran, has gained support.

There was a four-way race between the AIADMK, DMK, BJP, and Congress earlier in the 2014 elections. For the first time, Karthi Chidambaram was put up as a contender. Senthilnathan, the AIADMK candidate, won with 4,75,993 votes at the conclusion of that election.

Karti Chidambaram opposing the AIADMK and BJP

Sivaganga was usually assigned to the national party whether the Congress was a member of the AIADMK or DMK coalition; for this reason, this LS seat was known as the Congress constituency.

Xavier Dass, the AIADMK candidate, is from the Mukulathor clan, whereas Devanathan Yadav, the BJP candidate, is from the Yadava group. The AIADMK is expected to get the votes cast against the BJP and against Karthi Chidambaram. Votes for Dhinakaran and OPS backing will probably flow to the BJP as well. As a result, Sivanga is set up for a three-way race this time between the Congress, BJP, and AIADMK.

Important Sivaganga problems

The primary industries in Sivagangai district are agriculture and related ones. Because Sivagangai lags behind other constituencies in terms of industrial growth, the educated young from that area are forced to seek employment elsewhere in other states.

Despite the fact that banks have opened up extensively in Sivagangai and that women have been granted business loans, some people believe that manufacturers should not have been brought in to stimulate the economy and create jobs.

Project Cauvery-Gundaru-Vaikai is the primary need for the dry Sivaganga area. In order to boost employment, it is also anticipated that sizable industries would be built in the Sivagangai constituency. Voters are demanding the reopening of the Kalaiyar Temple National cotton mill and the establishment of granite industries in particular.
