CM of Delhi’s detention is a “blot” on democracy, according to the National Conference

Former J&K Chief Minister and senior NC leader Omar Abdullah today pledged his party’s support to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the AAP, a day after Kejriwal was arrested in connection with the purported excise policy fraud.

Omar published, “Aisi Taisi Democracy,” on X. Despite all of the hoopla of 400+ seats, the ruling class is seeming very uneasy. It is a stain on democracy when a sitting chief minister of the opposition is detained by a gullible central authority only days after the announcement of the general elections. According to him, his group supported Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi group.

Speaking to the media, Omar said that his party was unrelated to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which is run by the BJP. “Our goal is to overthrow the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir.” We’ll thrash them by wide margins, Omar said. “We will confront whatever it is that we must. We will confront it in the future, just as we did in the past,” he said.

“We have been fighting the BJP’s August 5, 2019, actions against Jammu and Kashmir nonstop. Regretfully, the parties that backed the BJP then are now stuck with the worst of what the BJP did to us. We were being held at the time. Those who backed the BJP back then are now in prison. We’ve always maintained that what happens in Jammu and Kashmir affects other regions of the nation,” Omar said.

Thousands of people in Kashmir were imprisoned on August 5, 2019, the day the government revoked Article 370 and divided Jammu and Kashmir into two states. Three previous chief ministers, Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah, and Mehbooba Mufti, were among those thousands.

Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi at the time, had backed the Center’s effort to repeal Article 370 of the Constitution, which gave Jammu and Kashmir special status.

Kejriwal was the first to accept the motion proposed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Parliament to repeal Article 370 and divide the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories under central government administration.

“We support the government’s choices on J&K. Soon after the resolution was rescheduled in August 2019, Kejriwal wrote, “We hope this will bring peace and development in the state.”

Omar said today that his party will stand with him and his party after his apprehension. All political parties were cautioned by us that the process of arrests and eroding democracy, which started in J&K, would not be limited to that region. It would have an effect across the nation. What happened to us—being imprisoned, being jailed, and seeing democracy crumble—is now evident in several regions of the nation, according to Omar.

Omar said that it is nothing new for various groups in Kashmir to forge coalitions in opposition to the National Conference. He brought up the 1977 elections, when the National Conference was being opposed by a coalition of political groups, including religious ones, during the illness of his grandpa, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah.

“They came together to oppose Sheikh Abdullah, aka Sheikh Sahab, during his illness. From his hospital bed, he launched his campaign, which he won handily. Something similar is being set up this time. Delhi-based parties are being asked to band together in opposition to the National Conference. We’ll take on this task the same way we’ve always done it,” he said.
