DD News Launches “Saffronization” Debate and Reveals New Logo

Within 48 hours of its release, the state-run Doordarshan news station DD News, which has a new logo, has generated discussion. The new DD News logo is orange in color, replacing the old one, which was ruby red.

The opposition parties have criticized the news station for changing its logo, claiming that Doordarshan is becoming “saffronized.”

The broadcaster said that the new logo just represents a shift in visual style, according to an Indian Express story that quoted the company’s chief executive officer (CEO), Gaurav Dwivedi.

Opposition party leaders, however, questioned the new logo’s release before of the Lok Sabha elections.

Tuesday night saw the release of the new logo, which was announced by DD News via its official name on social networking platform X.

All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) Rajya Sabha MP Jawhar Sircar, who formerly held the position of chief executive officer (CEO) of Prasar Bharati from 2012 to 2014, spearheaded the criticism directed on the broadcaster.

The statutory authority in charge of Doordarshan and All India Radio (AIR) is Prasar Bharati.

In a video that was uploaded on social media platform X, Sircar said, “It’s quite inappropriate to see that the national broadcaster has chosen the color saffron for its branding.”

“I believe this to be a violation of the Model Code of Conduct,” Sircar said, raising concerns about the implementation date.

It is using a certain color, which denotes a specific faith, instead of the government-funded apparatus. He went on, “A network and equipment that is meant to be totally impartial and at arm’s length.
