Election Commission of Karnataka issues notice for iftar party to be held in Mangalore on the road

The Election Commission took action on Friday in response to an iftar party, which is a meal eaten every day during Ramadan after sundown on a public road in Mangalore, Karnataka. The poll board reportedly sent the planners a notice for hosting the iftar party along a major road, based on stories in the media.

Following the Lok Sabha elections, the state implemented the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), and the Election Commission was notified of the incident after footage of it caused an uproar on social media.

The viral footage from the Mudipu Junction region shows people being served food and seats set in rows on one side of the road.

Social media users voiced their concerns by casting doubt on the planning of the iftar celebration while travelling. They recommended that community halls or houses should host these kinds of religious gatherings.

Several residents, shopkeepers, and rickshaw drivers were seen at the iftar gathering. According to media sources, the poll panel issued a warning to Abu Bakar, the organiser, for obstructing the road and producing a public nuisance.
