India fires the first in-house combat tank engine in test

Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), a defence PSU, tested India’s first-ever 1500 HP engine designed and manufactured in-country for main battle tanks on Wednesday. Given that the nation has not had access to engine-related technologies, this is crucial.

The Ministry of military (MoD) remarked, “The achievement heralds a new era in the country’s defence capabilities, showcasing the technological prowess and commitment to self-reliance in defence technologies.”

The engine section of BEML hosted the test fire, which was witnessed by Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane.

“A paradigm shift in military propulsion systems, possessing cutting-edge features such as high power-to-weight ratio, operability in extreme conditions including high altitudes, sub-zero temperatures, and desert environments,” according to the MoD, describes the 1500 HP engine.

According to the MoD, the engine is outfitted with cutting-edge technology and is comparable to the most sophisticated engines in the world.

The Defense Secretary referred to the Test Cell’s opening as a “transformational moment” that would improve the Armed Forces’ capabilities.

According to BEML CMD Shantanu Roy, the achievement demonstrates BEML’s dedication to meeting the demands of the government in this crucial area and strengthens the company’s position as a major contributor to defense manufacturing in the nation.

“The first test-firing of the 1500 HP engine signifies the completion of Generation One, focusing on technology stabilization,” the Ministry of Defense said, outlining the steps of development. BEML will be manufacturing engines for Generation Two, which will be integrated into real vehicles for user testing and used in different experiments at the Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment, a DRDO facility. The project is expected to be finished by the middle of 2025.

Commencing in August 2020, the project has been methodically organized into five significant checkpoints to guarantee on-time completion and compliance with quality requirements.

In order to honor the remarkable work of the BEML team, the defense secretary also unveiled the “Wall of Fame.”

It represents their role in strengthening the nation’s defense capabilities and setting new standards for domestic technical innovation.
