India took the initiative in bringing the five-nation BRICS grouping to agreement on the choice of additional members.

Significant progress was made in the expansion of BRICS at the presidents’ retreat on Tuesday, according to the news agency PTI, which cited sources.

The Leaders’ Retreat was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his international colleagues from Brazil, South Africa, and China.

Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, has not made the trip to Johannesburg for the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) meeting.

According to the report’s sources, India took the initiative to establish a consensus on the BRICS membership criteria and the selection of new members.

The report also said that India’s actions were motivated by the goal of adding New Delhi’s strategic allies as new members.

The annual summit of the organization places a lot of emphasis on the growth of BRICS.

It added that numerous nations have shown strong interest in joining the grouping, according to Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra on Monday.

He said at a briefing in New Delhi prior to Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Johannesburg that 23 countries have submitted their applications to join the BRICS and Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Argentina have emerged as strong contenders for the grouping’s membership.
