Kolkata Building Collapse: Under-Construction Building Caves In, Killing Five and Injuring Several More While Searching for Survivors Continues

In Hazari Mollah Bagan, in the Garden Reach neighborhood of Kolkata, a five-story under-construction structure collapsed, resulting in up to five fatalities and several injuries. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived at the scene after the event and assessed the situation. Banerjee also declared compensation for the deceased’s next of kin and for individuals who were injured on X, the previous Twitter platform.

“We will provide compensation to the affected parties as well as the deceased’s next of kin. We support the families in need, and rescue efforts will go on,” she said on X.

Officials were quoted by news agency PTI in reporting that a search and rescue effort is under way to free people who could be buried under the debris. There were also ambulances positioned there. Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal visited the scene and assessed the rescue effort after learning of the incident.

Late on Sunday night, a structure that was still under construction fell in the Garden Reach neighborhood. A few folks have been saved by us. The police officer informed PTI that the recusal operation is still ongoing.

Residents who saw the occurrence said that before the building collapsed, pieces of concrete fell off of it. There was a tremendous crash as the building fell, and the surrounding region was covered in a dense cloud of dust. According to officials, the heavily inhabited area’s neighboring shanties were struck by falling debris.

“The under-construction structure crashed on the nearby shanties, despite the fact that no one lived there. We are concerned that a large number of people may still be buried under the debris,” a local told PTI.

Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari asked the West Bengal administration to give quick help by posting images from the building collapse scene on X, previously Twitter.

Adhikari urged the West Bengal State Disaster Management Team to get quickly involved for rescue and relief efforts, saying, “I urge @chief_west, Secretary @HomeBengal, @CPKolkata to do so immediately.”
