Mizoram Police step up their efforts to combat the drug problem as the state develops new means of smuggling

The neighboring Mizoram has become the new conduit for importing narcotics from Myanmar with the current unrest in Manipur, leading the state police to boost up efforts to combat the threat.

According to authorities, the police effort resulted in the discovery of narcotics valued at Rs 60 crore and the arrest of two citizens of Myanmar within a week.

Since May 3, when a “Tribal Solidarity March” was organized in the hill districts to protest against the dominant Meitei community’s desire for Scheduled Tribe status, more than 180 people have been murdered and hundreds wounded in ethnic violence in Manipur.

Drug gangs are attempting to use Mizoram as a new conduit for transporting narcotics from Myanmar, according to the government, while attempts are made to manage the ethnic conflict in Manipur.

“Our relentless action against drug trafficking and smugglers is continuing, and Mizoram Police is taking strict action against the transit of drugs in the state,” Director General of Police Anil Shukla told PTI.

He said that in Mizoram, where assembly elections are scheduled for this year, drug smuggling remains a significant source of worry.

Police are working tirelessly to combat the drug problem in order to enhance overall policing and guarantee the calm and orderly conduct of assembly elections. Significant seizures have been made as a consequence, according to Shukla.

Ropianga (37), a native of the Khawmawi region of Myanmar, was in possession of 11.6 kg of crystal methamphetamine worth Rs 34 crore when the Special Branch team of the Aizawl district stopped a car at Zemabawk East on the evening of October 4.

According to them, a case was filed in this regard under the appropriate parts of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act read with the Foreigners Act.

In a separate incidence, Lalremthangi, a 38-year-old woman, was detained on October 3 at the Lengpui Airport with 10.4 kg of crystal meth worth Rs 31 crore on the black market, according to the authorities.

They said the contraband was being smuggled into Delhi from Myanmar in a suitcase when it was discovered by the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of Mizoram Police during X-ray baggage check at the airport.

The accused lady lives and works in Delhi, according to initial interrogation, they said.

They said that she had lately visited Myanmar and was traveling to Delhi from Aizawl with the narcotics.

About 3 kilogram of the same rare medication, worth Rs 9 crore on the international market, were confiscated by the ANTF last month.

While DGP Shukla’s squad is dedicated to combating the menace, he urged members of the public to come out and assist the police in locating and apprehending drug traffickers.

“It is sincerely desired that all parties play a proactive role in strengthening law enforcement authorities by alerting them to any criminal activity. The ideal of a drug-free Mizoram can and will be realized if we work together, he said.
