On average, there are 70 conflagrations during the harvest of crops each year

Annually, the Fire Department contends with a multitude of fire incidents, numbering up to 70, throughout the span of the ten-day wheat harvesting season. Noteworthy is the surge in cases coinciding with the onset of crop harvesting. At times, the conflagration proves formidable to contain, spiraling out of control. The commencement of crop harvesting primarily unfolds in the Mehatpur and Nakodar precincts of Jalandhar district.

“It’s not uncommon for the flames to extend up to 4 kilometers, leaping from one field to another,” remarked an official.

Rajinder Singh Sahota, representing the Fire Department, underscored the constant plea to farmers for meticulous oversight of their fields during harvesting. He emphasized, “Farmers must exercise utmost caution, ensuring no beedi, cigarette, or other combustible materials encroach upon their fields.” He cautioned, “Even a minor ignition of wheat stubble or any other debris could wreak havoc upon the fields.”

“The ongoing wheat harvesting season poses a significant challenge, marked by numerous field fires. We often mobilize personnel from adjacent blocks to contain extensive blazes,” stated a senior official.

“With the advent of the harvesting season, officials remain vigilant, prepared to address any exigencies,” he added.

“Last year, we found it imperative to have 20 to 25 fire tenders at the ready, ensuring timely intervention for each fire incident,” he elaborated.

Notably, an incident occurred recently when a truck carrying LPG gas cylinders overturned near Cholang, necessitating the dispatch of fire tenders from Hoshiarpur to preempt any potential catastrophe.
