‘One Nation One Election’ Committee’s’ Initial Meeting Is Set For September 23: Ronald Kovind

On September 23, the ‘One Nation One Election’ committee will have its first formal meeting, which will be presided over by a former Indian president. The “one nation, one election” strategy, which contains a notion that raised the prospect of holding the Lok Sabha elections alongside a number of state assembly elections anticipated this year, is the subject of the committee’s creation.

What the committee does
Prior to the simultaneous elections, the Centre established an eight-person committee under the leadership of the late President Ram Nath Kovind to recommend Constitutional reforms.

Home Minister Amit Shah, Lok Sabha Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, former Rajya Sabha opposition leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, and former Finance Commission chairman NK Singh will serve on the committee.

Subhash C. Kashyap, a renowned attorney, former Chief Vigilance Commissioner Sanjay Kothari, and senior counsel Harish Salve will also serve on the panel.

According to reports, Legal Affairs Secretary Niten Chandra would serve as the panel’s secretary, while Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will attend committee sessions as a special invitee.

Committee’s objectives
The committee was established to review and suggest any changes that would be necessary to the Constitution, the Representation of the People Act, and any other laws or regulations in order to organize simultaneous elections. The committee will also consider whether state approval of the Constitutional modifications is necessary and provide a recommendation in that regard.

Additionally, it will participate in the study and formulation of suggestions for potential responses to situations like a hung House, the passage of a motion of no confidence, defections, or any other occurrence in the case of simultaneous elections.

All individuals, statements, and messages that the committee believes will help it complete its work and formulate its recommendations will be heard and considered.
