Parts of Tamil Nadu see intense rain, and the Nilgiris district closes its schools

After torrential rains pounded the Nilgiris area on Friday, landslides and mudslides were recorded in at least ten locations on the Kothagiri-Mettupalayam Highway and the Coonoor-Mettupalayam National Highway. Restoration work is already ongoing in Tamil Nadu. Numerous teams were seen supporting the restoration efforts, according to ANI news agency.

Due to the intense downpour, district collector M Aruna of Nilgiris district decided to declare a vacation on Friday for both government and private schools in the Kotagiri and Coonoor areas.

In sections of Tamil Nadu, including Chengalpattu, Coimbatore, Coonoor, Kothagiri, and Thoothukudi, there have been reports of heavy rains. There have also been reports of waterlogging in a few areas.

Tamil Nadu regions and Puducherry were warned to expect mild to moderate rainfall over the next three days by Chennai’s Regional Meteorological Department on Thursday.

“Light to moderate rainfall is expected in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry over the next two to three days.” In various areas, including the Nilgiris and Coimbatore, there is an expectation of heavy rains. Director of the Chennai Regional Meteorological Department Balachandran was reported by news agency ANI as stating, “We will continue to monitor and inform you if any change occurs.”

“In the last 24 hours, heavy rainfall was observed in numerous locations,” he said. The clouds, which were mostly in the eastern regions of the Bay of Bengal, have migrated, as can be seen. In the state, there were around 45 locations with heavy rainfall, 8 with very high rainfall, and 2 with very heavy rainfall.

The Nilgiris, Theni, Thenkasi, and Coimbatore districts were expected to see heavy to very heavy rain on Thursday, according to the Met department’s prediction.

According to the prediction, Erode, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, and Thoothukudi are anticipated to have significant rainfall on Friday.

Eight districts, including Tenkasi, Viruthunagar, Pudhukottai, Nilgiri, Theni, Thirunelveli, Kanyakumari, and Thoothukudi, had their district collectors announce a vacation for public and private schools on Thursday.
