Punjab government will investigate calls for a meat and alcohol ban on Mahavir Jayanti

The Administrative Secretary, Home Affairs and Justice, has been instructed by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to look into the demand about the closure of slaughterhouses, stores selling meat, fish, and poultry, as well as the sale of non-vegetarian food and alcohol on Bhagwan Mahavir Janma Kalyanak on April 21.

In this context, a note representing all Jains’ sects was delivered to the Chief Minister by the Vishwa Jain Sangathan (VJS). According to the organization, its activity benefited society as a whole.

As the 24th Tirthankara of the Jains, Lord Mahavir promoted nonviolence, truth, peace, and fraternity among all people. The organization recommended that on the holy day of Mahavir Janam Kalyanak, the slaughter of innocent animals, birds, fish, and the serving and consumption of non-vegetarian food and drink be banned as a suitable respect to him and his values.

The organization’s convenor for the Punjab branch, Sandeep Jain, said that the Punjab State Minority Commission had already informed the government of the community’s demands via a resolution.

Jain had asked the state government to declare the slaughterhouse, non-vegetarian restaurants, and alcoholic beverage stores closed on April 21 and to extensively publicize and implement the closures on Mahavir Jayanti.
