Surakhya Sadak Punjab enforces laws against drunk driving and excessive speeding

The Punjab Cabinet approved the creation of the Sadak Surakhya Force (road safety force) on Friday in order to combat drunk driving and excessive speeding in the region.

This decision was made at a Council of Ministers meeting that was conducted on Friday afternoon at the Punjab Civil Secretariat under the auspices of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

According to a representative for the Chief Minister’s Office, the Cabinet approved the creation of this force as part of an initiative to improve road safety in the state, which includes 5,500 km of national roads.

“The Cabinet said that during the last three decades, Punjab has seen a tremendous rise in traffic and road infrastructure. The state’s road network is 72,078 km long, with the national and state highways making up 4,025 km, or 5.64 percent, of that total.

According to the spokesman, the Cabinet took notice of the 4,476 lives lost in road accidents in 2021 and the fact that 65% of traffic deaths occur on state and federal roadways with worry.

“The majority of these deadly collisions occur between 6 p.m. and 12 p.m., when there are few police officers on these highways. Highway patrol routes have been chosen in accordance with the Cabinet’s decision based on patterns in previous years’ road accident data,” he said.

On these roads, up to 144 patrolling cars, each covering a distance of 30 kilometers, will be used. These vehicles will be outfitted with specialized technology to check for drunk driving and excessive speeding.

30 crore rupees have been set aside for the acquisition of cars and the equipment that will go inside of them. The Sadak Suraksha Force would be staffed with around 5,000 police officers. The new recruits will instantly make between 1,200 and 1,500 of them available for the army.

In the meanwhile, the Cabinet approved the construction of a martyrs’ monument in a prominent park in each district. The names of the martyrs and heroic freedom fathers from that district who gave their life in the independence fight shall be on this monument so that their immeasurable contribution might encourage future generations to serve the nation and its people with selflessness.
