Anwar El Ghazi is suspended from the German club Mainz for making a “unacceptable” social media post on the Israel-Hamas conflict

Dutch striker Anwar El Ghazi has been banned by Bundesliga team Mainz for making what it deemed to be a “unacceptable” social media statement about the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The team said on its website that it had “relieved Anwar El Ghazi of his training and matchday related duties” as a result of a post he made on Sunday that he has since removed. There is no mention of the content of the post or of the player’s potential return to the team.

El Ghazi was “released from training and matchday activities,” according to Mainz spokesman Silke Bannick, who on Wednesday refused to provide any more information. Please be aware that we won’t make any further comments after the formal announcement.

“In the post, El Ghazi stated a viewpoint on the ongoing conflict in the Middle East that was deemed unacceptable by the club,” Mainz announced on its website. The organization and the player had a thorough conversation prior to making this choice.

El Ghazi, age 28, has signed with Mainz after playing at PSV Eindhoven, Aston Villa, and Everton in the past. He has participated in three games as a replacement for the group.

Youcef Atal was expelled from Nice in France for posting an antisemitic statement on social media. The French club released a statement stating that it had spoken with Atal about the matter and that he had expressed regret.
