IPL2024: CSK and PBKS square off in a battle of the kings at The Den as CSK looks to secure a playoff bid

In the upcoming Indian Premier League season, holders Chennai Super Kings host visiting Punjab Kings at The Den on May 1.

The teams are arranged on opposing sides of the points table, with Chennai in third place after nine games with 10 points and Punjab, who have also played nine games, in eighth place with six points from the ten-team competition.

With a dominant display against Sunrisers Hyderabad, CSK got back on track and moved up to third place in the standings. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad continued to demonstrate his amazing touch with the willow in hand. With the exception of one game, the reigning champions have won all of their home games this season, and they seem ready to maintain their winning trend.

Punjab will be full of confidence after defeating the Kolkata Knight Riders in their last match by a record of 108 runs, requiring eight wickets and plenty of deliveries remaining. This was made possible by English opener Jonny Bairstow’s unbroken century.

The Punjabi team defeated the Delhi Capitals 1-0 at their new Mullanpur stadium to open the season, but they lost to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Lucknow Super Giants consecutively after that. They added a few more points to their tally by winning another game on the road against the Gujarat Titans.

The Preity Zinta-owned team, however, lost four consecutive games before their incredible comeback against KKR. They also suffered painful losses against SRH, the Rajasthan Royals, the Mumbai Indians, and the Gujarat Titans, but they showed their tenacity at Eden Gardens.

For the first time this season, the visitors would prefer to win three straight games, but any club may find it difficult to defeat the formidable Chennai on the road.

Before losing two games on the road against DC and SRH, CSK started the tournament with back-to-back victories at home against RCB and GT.

Before CSK won their first away game of the year against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede, The Den inspired their home team to victory over the visiting KKR. In the next two games, LSG defeated Chennai both at home and away. However, Gaikwad led from the front to propel Chennai up the ladder with a strong showing against SRH in front of their passionate supporters.

If chosen skipper Shikhar Dhawan remains injured, Sam Curran is predicted to head the Punjabi team; his suitability will be determined on game day. As they did in their victory against Kolkata, PBKS will depend on openers Bairstow and Prabhsimran Singh to get them off to a strong start. IPL 2024 discoveries Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma will then look to put the final touches on the innings.

With a spectacular fifty against SRH in pivotal circumstances, CSK’s Kiwi recruit, Daryl Mitchell, appears to have found his feet. Meanwhile, Shivam Dube has been the holders’ absolute colossus in the middle order, earning him a well-earned call-up to the national team for the ICC T20 World Cup.

After the game, Chennai bowler Mustafizur Rahman will leave for international duty. In what is probably his last match at the MAC this season, the seamer’s rippers might be crucial in upsetting the Punjabi batting order.

The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM IST, but despite the intense heat that is characteristic of the South Indian city at this time of year, the fanatical yellow audience is predicted to arrive at the legendary venue considerably sooner.
