Lewis Hamilton and Carlos Sainz are two of eight drivers that received late Austrian Grand Prix penalties

Eight drivers were penalised after race officials determined late on Sunday that Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton had broken the Austrian Grand Prix’s track rules.

The stewards discovered they had lost track of some of the breaches during an attrition race that was broken up by safety cars.

More than 1,200 possible track limit violations were reported throughout the race, according to a statement from the sport’s governing body, the FIA.

Aston Martin submitted a post-race complaint due to the uncertainty.

After examining their calculations late on Sunday night, the stewards fined eight drivers.

A number of track restriction violations were not previously reported to the Stewards for possible punishment, according to an analysis of the list of erased lap times.

It was decided that several of these violations deserved penalties that hadn’t previously been imposed.

Five competitors who were competing for points were all found to have broken the rules once, which added 10 seconds to their timings.

The highest-placed finisher to get a penalty, Sainz of Ferrari, fell from fourth to sixth. Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin and Lando Norris of McLaren Mercedes both advanced.

Hamilton traded positions with George Russell, another member of the Mercedes team, dropping from seventh to ninth.

Alpine’s Pierre Gasly slipped to tenth position. Williams Mercedes’ Alex Albon was penalized but managed to hold into 11th place, narrowly outside the points.

Esteban Ocon dropped two positions to 14th after accruing four penalties that contributed 40 seconds to his time. Yuki Tsunoda placed last out of the 19 finishers due to two penalties for 15 seconds given to Nyck De Vries and one for 5 seconds to him.
