Spurs’ controversial 2-1 victory against Liverpool is sealed by an own goal, which the referees call a “significant human error”

Joel Matip’s last-second own goal put an end to Liverpool’s fightback, and Tottenham denied a goal that the referees’ body conceded should have been allowed to stand as the visitors earned a contentious 2-1 victory against nine-man Liverpool.

Ange Postecoglou’s team broke Liverpool’s undefeated start to the Premier League season and extended their own thanks to the thrilling conclusion in north London as Liverpool had Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota sent off.

Before Luis Diaz’s goal for Liverpool was mistakenly disallowed for offside by VAR in the first half, Jones was expelled.

“A significant human error” was eventually acknowledged by the referees’ organization PGMOL.

“This was a clear and obvious factual error and should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention, but the VAR failed to intervene,” it stated in a statement.

Son Heung-min gave Tottenham the lead, Cody Gakpo matched it before halftime, and Liverpool was reduced to nine men after the break when Jota was sent off.

Just seconds before the end, Matip unintentionally turned Pedro Porro’s cross into his own goal, giving Liverpool hope that they would hang out against all odds.

Jurgen Klopp, the manager of Liverpool, was incensed and remarked, “I never witnessed a game with such unjust conditions and stupid judgments.

It was an offside goal. When you look at it, it is not offside; their lines were drawn incorrectly.

“Curtis steps on the ball and is given the first red card. A good tackle. First yellow wasn’t a yellow for Jota.

Tottenham finally had a rare victory against Liverpool after a miserable record of just one victory in 23 matches with the Reds in all competitions.

Tottenham’s victory against Liverpool was their first since that year, when they were temporarily residing at Wembley.

After Manchester City’s unexpected defeat against Wolves earlier on Saturday, Postecoglou’s team passed Liverpool to take second position, trailing the champions by only one point.

Liverpool is one point behind Tottenham in fourth position after losing for the first time in nine games in all competitions.

It was a particularly memorable victory for Postecoglou since he idolized legendary Liverpool manager Bill Shankly as a young supporter of the Reds’ outstanding 1970s squads.

In the wake of Tottenham’s disastrous season under his predecessor Antonio Conte, the former Celtic manager has done an amazing job of turning the team around.

Although it is still too early to declare Tottenham title challengers, their victories against Liverpool and Manchester United, together with their draw with Arsenal, highlight Postecoglou’s significant influence.

In terms of the manner we want to play, the group’s age, and experience, Postecoglou stated, “We’re still a team in its infancy.

“Especially the way it occurred, it really affected and left an imprint on everyone concerned.

“We had to deal with a lot and display a different aspect of our abilities. I think we were pretty strong in the second half.

The 26th minute saw the beginning of Postecoglou’s most memorable victory when Jones’ lifted boot hit Yves Bissouma on the ankle.

After being instructed to check the pitchside monitor, referee Simon Hooper raised the sentence from a yellow to a red.

Tottenham gained the lead in the 36th minute after Diaz was wrongfully denied by the offside flag.

Richarlison was seen running down the left wing by James Maddison’s exquisite ball, and the Brazilian’s cross was perfectly weighted for Son to flick home from close range.

In the last seconds of the first half, Virgil van Dijk headed a cross from Dominik Szoboszlai back across goal. Gakpo took a touch and then fired a strong effort from 10 yards out past Guglielmo Vicario.

Just 90 seconds after the Portugal striker received a booking for clipping the same opponent, Jota was unnecessarily sent out after 69 minutes for a sliding challenge on Destiny Udogie.

Tottenham persisted in pressing Liverpool’s hulking defense, and six minutes into stoppage time, they were rewarded.

Matip attempted to stop Porro’s low cross, but his outstretched leg pushed the ball past Alisson, setting up raucous Tottenham celebrations.
