Up to 150,000 pounds are pledged by UK Sport to support the staging of a Diamond League match at the London Stadium

UK Sport said on Thursday that it has committed up to 150,000 pounds ($188,000) to assist UK Athletics in hosting the Diamond League event at the London Stadium next month.

According to UK Sport, the nation’s regulatory body of sport, the money, which comes from the National Lottery large event financing, is intended to make up a portion of the anticipated shortfall in hosting the event on July 23.

Sally Munday, chief executive of UK Sport, said in a statement, “We want the UK to continue on the Diamond League schedule and for the event to become financially viable as early as feasible.

“We are eager to collaborate with our UK Athletics colleagues in the lead-up to the event and beyond to try to ensure this happens,” they said.

Diamond League competitions were last held at the London Stadium in 2019.

Due to the expenses of adapting the site, the event was relocated out of the city the next year after the 2020 one was postponed due to the COVID-19 epidemic. Last year’s event took place in Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium.

UK Athletics reported a deficit of 1.8 million pounds for the fiscal year that concluded on March 31, 2022, in December.

UK Athletics chief executive Jack Buckner said, “We’re thankful to UK Sport for this award and look forward to working with them regarding the long-term sustainability of athletics events held in the UK.
