A Major Privacy Feature May Soon Be Available on the Web Version of WhatsApp: Every Detail

Finally, WhatsApp is developing a feature that will enable users to avoid disclosing their phone numbers to unidentified parties. Users of Android devices running the beta version of WhatsApp now have the ability to connect using shared usernames rather than phone numbers. It has now been observed that users of the WhatsApp web client will get access to the same feature on the messaging app.

The profile settings, located just under the name tab in the UI, will allow you to select a username for WhatsApp. The software makes it quite evident that others will be able to discover and contact you without having to know your phone number, as shown in the picture below. This privacy feature has the potential to attract new users to WhatsApp in addition to current ones.

Many have expressed dissatisfaction over the fact that WhatsApp’s easy way to connect with someone by just using their phone number is never a safe method, particularly if you don’t want everyone to know your contact information. Thus, the username functions as a kind of unique identification, similar to what users of the BlackBerry BBM for handsets in the past experienced.

You may construct your username by prefixing your desired name on the chat app with “@.” One advantage of WhatsApp usernames is that they are changeable, so you may change them as often as you want. This feature guarantees that users will keep using WhatsApp.

With the beta version 2.23.11.15, Android users get a preview of the usernames, which should be available to everyone in the next weeks. With the addition of new features in 2023, WhatsApp kept itself occupied, and we anticipate that it will continue to do so in 2024.
