Exclusive: Raima Sen On Legend Suchitra Sen Giving Up Films: We Just Respected Her Choice

Actress Raima Sen is getting ready for her next Hindi film, Maa Kaali. The film is based on the Direct Action Day on August 16, 1946, which is sometimes regarded as a lost chapter in Indian history. The actress is the granddaughter of the renowned Suchitra Sen and the daughter of actress Moon Moon Sen. She has a wide range of work in the Bengali and Hindi cinema industries. Known for her famous roles in films like as Sharey Chuattor, Harano Sur, Debi Choudhurani, Aandhi, and Devdas, Suchitra Sen abruptly decided to quit the spotlight and go into her own world. Raima was questioned on Suchitra Sen’s exit from the film industry.

Raima spoke candidly about the legendary Suchitra Sen’s choice to give up acting in a Zoom exclusive. “We got to know her after she quit watching movies. We never saw her as a star or a celebrity, she said, “so for us she was just amma, who was very affectionate and loved us more than anything else.” Growing up, we probably never realized who she was. She was always simply our very devoted and kind grandma.”

However, did they never question her why she gave up all that made her a household name?

Raima went on to say that her all-time favorite movie is the Hindi classic Aandhi, directed by Suchitra Sen. “Every time I watch the movie, it just makes me cry.” I’ve watched every one of her movies, and they’re all excellent. I like Saat Pake Bandha as well. But maybe that song in Aandhi evokes so many different feelings and recollections,” she said.
Suchitra Sen chose a life of seclusion in 1978 after retiring from the screen after a fruitful 25-year career. The movie “Nati Binodini,” in which she was supposed to co-star with Rajesh Khanna, was shelved halfway through when she declared her intention to give up acting.
