There has been a lot of conjecture around Netflix’s abrupt withdrawal of Dev Patel’s graphic first feature, Monkey Man, which he had approved and invested a lot of money in making.

“Monkey Man is filled with sharp direct potshots at the ruling government,” said a source close to Netflix. Throughout the whole movie, there are hoardings and sloganeering criticizing India’s political system. Netflix didn’t want to make the same error with Tandav after what happened to Amazon.

Director-producer Jordan Peele intervened to save Dev Patel’s movie when Netflix decided to cancel it.

Even with the valiant efforts to turn the saffron color of hoardings into red, it is doubtful that Monkey Man will obtain an Indian distribution now that the movie has been released worldwide.
