Raj Shekhar: Meaningful lyrics are being rediscovered by people

2023 was an amazing year for Raj Shekhar, a lyricist. Raj, who wrote three songs for Animal, adds, “Mera humesha se sapna tha ki main Shah Rukh Khan aur Ranbir Kapoor ki film ka hissa banun, uss mein se ek sapna tohpura ho gaya hai.” “I worked with new individuals, and the year 2023 began with two of my songs in Akhil Sathyan’s Pachuvum Athbuthavilakkum, and it finished with three songs (Marham, Pehle Bhi Main, and Papa Meri Jaan) in Animal.

Raj adds, “I just learned that my songs are heard by more than 20–25 million people, which is a validation in and of itself and pushes me as a creative to do greater work.
Raj says he could do a lot of research with the words of Mismatched by Aise Kyun.

Numerous songs by the writer reached the top of music charts, including Aise Kyun (from Mismatched) and Pehle Bhi Main. “For Animal, Sandeep Reddy sir was very clear about what he wanted and the emotions he wanted in these songs,” Raj explains while discussing the songwriting process. I composed the songs, “Marham ka” and “Pehle Bhi Main ka jo ki aap sun rahe hain,” precisely as per his brief, which I received. Because the bond between a father and son is so intricate, I had written seven or eight additional stanzas when I started composing Papa Meri Jaan, but we only ended up with four. The brief provided by Mismatched’s Aise Kyun was somewhat vague and changeable. They provided a general synopsis of the scenario since the series and screenplay were still in development. I came here with the intention of exploring, and I used terms like gulmohar and zaafraan.
After working in the field for over ten years, Raj claims that people are finally returning to meaningful lyrics. My first movie was Tanu Weds Manu. Since then, I’ve worked on films like Veere Di Wedding, Mismatched, Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Uri, and Tumbbad. People seem to be returning to the lyrics lately, I’ve observed. The words have a significant role in the attractiveness of songs with a lengthy duration. Good lyrics should be relatable rather than include complicated terms. My target audience is mostly young people, ages 17 to 25, so it’s not like they won’t listen to poetry in the songs. Raj adds, “I believe they are open to trying new things.”
