Suchitra Krishnamoorthi Recounts Her Friend’s Statement, “Orry Culture Is Dangerous”

The actress Suchitra Krishnamoorthi, who starred with Shah Rukh Khan in Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, is concerned about the ‘Orry’ culture’s increasing influence. Instead of recognizing celebrities’ career accomplishments, she feels that the media spends too much time discussing how much their clothing costs and other lifestyle-related topics. Ms. Krishnamoorthi believes that instead of focusing only on what superstars wear, the media should speak more about those who have struggled to succeed on their own.

She is of the opinion that the Hindi cinema business has become a “ticketed zoo.” In this case, success is strongly correlated with popularity, and exposure is valued above skill.

In an extremely critical essay on X, the platform that was once known as Twitter, Ms. Krishnamoorthy explores the psychology of “Orry culture,” linking it to a desire for external affirmation and ingrained fears. According to her, showing off designer labels as a status symbol is a phony effort to make up for a lack of true uniqueness and value.

The former actress has already expressed her disapproval of the bad parts of the Hindi cinema business. She spoke out last year about her encounter with Bollywood’s casting couch.

Suchitra Krishnamoorthi recounted the incident, saying that she was once invited to stay the night by a filmmaker-producer. We were having our conference at a hotel, which was commonplace for meetings back then. It was quite typical. I said that my father and I are quite close. “Very nice, then tell your father that I will drop you back home tomorrow morning,” he added.

Suchitra Krishnamoorthi continued, saying that she needed some time to “process” what was going on. “I felt like I was about to cry. I gathered everything I had, declared my arrival, and took off running. Processing it takes some time. Then it occurred to me, “It’s currently 4-5 pm.” Until tomorrow am, what will I do with him? Then it began to dawn on me what he was most likely planning,” she said.
