The first person to announce India’s independence on radio was this prolific actor

Early on August 15, 1947, a young man with a baritone voice announced to East Asia over All India Radio for the first time that India had become an independent nation and was emancipated from the British Raj. The Indians still carry that unique experience deep into their hearts and souls. Whose voice was it, you ask?

over August 15, 1947, renowned actor Poornam Viswanathan was the first to declare India’s independence over All India Radio (AIR). He was a very successful actor who mostly appeared in Tamil films. At the age of eighteen, he began his theater career. He joined a South Indian play group in order to develop his acting career. He was employed by All India Radio (AIR) as a news reader.

He moved to Chennai in 1964, where he played a variety of parts in plays written by Marina, including Thanikuduthanam, Oor Vambu, and Kaal Kattu, which brought him praise and recognition. His performances in plays like Adimaigal, Oonjal, and Kadavul Vandirundar further delighted the audience. His love of performing and his lengthy history in the theater inspired him to form his own theatrical group, which he named Poornam New Theatres.

In addition to performing, he worked as a press information officer’s assistant and then took on roles as editor of Thittam and senior reporter for Yojana, a government of India publication that publishes a monthly magazine covering socioeconomic concerns in the nation.

Notable films in which he has acted include Varumayin Niram Sivappu, Moondram Pirai, Rajapart Rangadurai, Thillu Mullu, Varusham 16, Keladi Kanmani, Aasai, and Mahanadhi. He will be most remembered by Malayalam viewers for his performance as Mohanlal’s opposite in the popular film Chithram. He costarred with Kamal Haasan and Rati Agnihotri in the Bollywood hit film Ek Duuje Ke Liye.

Poornam’s acting prowess won the attention of renowned author Sujatha, who chose the actor to play the lead role in his drama, Narendanin Vinotha Valakku. Sujatha’s comedy-drama Kadavul Vanthirunthaar, also made the audience laugh uncontrollably and praised Poornam’s acting skills.
