According to a Lancet survey, 36% of Indians have hypertension and over 11% have diabetes

According to data from a countrywide study that was published in the journal The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, 11.4% of Indians have diabetes, while 35.5% of the population has hypertension. The Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, in conjunction with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and other institutions, performed the research that also revealed that India had a prevalence of generalized obesity and abdominal obesity of 28.6 and 39.5%, respectively.

Based on a survey of 1,13,043 (almost 1.1akh) persons (33,537 urban and 79,506 rural citizens) in 31 states and Union Territories throughout the nation between 2008 and 2020, the findings analyze the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCD) across the states.

The survey also revealed that 81.2% of Indians have dyslipidaemia, which is an imbalance of lipids including cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). 35.5% of Indians have hypertension, 15.3% have pre-diabetes, and the remaining 15.3% have hypertension. “Urban regions had higher rates of all metabolic NCDs than rural areas, with the exception of prediabetes. The ratio of diabetes to prediabetes was often smaller than one in states with a lower human development index, according to the study’s authors.

A three-level stratification based on geography, population size, and socioeconomic position of each state was used by the team, which also included researchers from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, to conduct the survey across many stages.

“Diabetes and other metabolic NCDs are far more common than previously thought in India. According to the study’s authors, the diabetes pandemic is stabilizing in the nation’s more developed states but is still growing in the majority of other states. In order to stop the fast spreading pandemic of metabolic NCDs in India, they argued that there are urgent state-specific policies and interventions that must be made.
