Iranian FM and Hamas leader talk on the phone about the events in Gaza

According to a statement issued by the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of the Hamas political bureau, and Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian discussed the most recent events in Gaza over the phone two days ago.

According to Xinhua news agency, Haniyeh discussed the most recent political and humanitarian events in Gaza on Friday, characterizing the humanitarian situation in the northern part of the territory as “critical.”

He noted that in order to combat Israel’s strategy of famine against the people living in the coastal enclave, particularly the children, the international community must act swiftly to supply enough humanitarian supplies to Gaza.

The head of Hamas went into more detail about the demands of Hamas for a ceasefire and the exchange of prisoners, stating that these demands were based on the “legitimate demand” of the Palestinians and that Israel was interfering.

Amir-Abdollahian, on the other hand, gave the head of Hamas an update on Iran’s most recent diplomatic initiatives and consultations with the Palestinians, including the nation’s active involvement in international gatherings concerning Gaza and the Palestine problem.

He called on international organizations to act quickly to stop “the killing of the helpless Palestinian people, including women and children,” in Gaza and the West Bank, and to ensure that all Gaza residents would get humanitarian relief immediately and indefinitely.

Since Israel started its war against Hamas on October 7, 2023, 31,988 Palestinians have died and over 74,188 have been wounded in the Gaza Strip, the Gaza-based Health Ministry said on Thursday.

Around 1,200 Israelis lost their lives in an unprecedented onslaught on southern Israel by Hamas, according to Israeli officials, which sparked the start of the conflict.
