Japanese prime minister was attacked with explosives, and a suspect has been charged with attempted murder

According to Japanese media, prosecutors in Japan on Wednesday filed an indictment against a 24-year-old man for attempted murder and other offenses related to the April explosion that injured Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

In western Japan’s Wakayama, Kishida was running for office when a guy tossed a crude pipe bomb at him. Kishida escaped injury, but two others suffered only slight wounds.

Prosecutors decided that Ryuji Kimura, 24, is mentally ready for trial after a three-month psychological assessment of the suspect, and that the bomb used in the assault was fatal, according to Japan’s Kyodo news agency.

According to court documents, Kimura could have been upset that he couldn’t run for office in the 2022 elections, according to a Kyodo report.

About a year has passed since Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe was fatally assassinated while running for office.

The assaults on Abe and Kishida startled many people in Japan since gun and bomb violence is very uncommon there.
