Rosalynn Carter, a former US first lady, passes away aged 96

in the age of 96, former US First Lady Rosalynn Carter—a supporter of women’s rights, mental health, and caregiving—passed died in her Plains, Georgia, home.

In the presence of her family, she passed away on Sunday at 2:10 p.m., according to a statement released by The Carter Center.

Carter spent 77 years as the spouse of Jimmy Carter, the 39th US president and the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize winner, who is now 99 years old.

“Rosalynn was my equal collaborator in all of my endeavors.” The statement cited the former President as stating, “She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it.”

“I always knew I had love and support from someone as long as Rosalynn was alive.”

Her children, Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy, as well as her 11 grandkids and 14 great-grandchildren, survive her.

Chip Carter said of his mother, “My mother was a great humanitarian in her own right, in addition to being a loving mother and extraordinary First Lady.”

“She set an example for all Americans with her life of kindness and service. Not only will our family mourn her dearly, but so will the many others who now have access to services for caring and improved mental health treatment.

The former first lady was placed in hospice care, according to a statement made by the Carter Center on November 17.

According to CNN, a dementia diagnosis was made for her in May.

Jimmy Carter had a string of hospital hospitalizations before starting home hospice care in February.

At a Christmas celebration at Naval Station Norfolk on Sunday, First Lady Jill Biden honored the memory of Rosalynn Carter by informing the military personnel and their families, “The former first lady Rosalynn Carter has just passed away.” She was also well-known for her work on women’s rights, mental health, and caregiving.

Speaking to media during the Christmas gathering, President Joe Biden expressed his admiration for the Carter family. He said, “They brought so much grace to the office; they’re really an incredible family.”

In a similar vein, former First Lady Laura Bush and President George W. Bush referred to Rosalynn Carter as “a woman of dignity and strength.”

“No one was a better supporter of President Carter, and their collaboration was a beautiful illustration of faithfulness and dedication. She has made a significant contribution to the de-stigmatization of mental health. In a joint statement, the pair stated, “We join our fellow citizens in sending our condolences to President Carter and their family.”
