‘Laughing gas’ is banned in the UK to stop antisocial behavior

On Wednesday, nitrous oxide, often known as “laughing gas,” became illegal in Britain. Anyone found manufacturing, distributing, or selling the substance might face lengthy jail terms.

The drug has gained popularity, especially among young people, and produces feelings of pleasure, relaxation, and detachment from reality. However, the government claims that the drug poses a health risk and encourages disruptive behavior.

“This drug’s use in public places has too long encouraged antisocial behavior, which is detrimental to communities. In a statement, British Policing Minister Chris Philp declared, “We will not accept it.”

The maximum jail sentence for selling laughing gas has been increased to 14 years, and those who abuse the medication on a regular basis might face penalties or even two years in prison under the new law.

Nitrous oxide is the third most popular drug among 16 to 24 year olds, according to data from the health ministry. Excessive use of this substance may lead to anemia and, in more serious instances, paralysis or damage to the nerves.

Suella Braverman, the interior minister, said in September that people were “fed up” with drug usage in public areas and that abandoned gas canisters were lying throughout the streets of Britain.

Its lawful uses in the dental and medical fields, among others, are not prohibited. The authorities said that while licenses would not be needed, users will have to prove they are “lawfully in possession” of the substance and do not plan to inhale it.

As a result of the prohibition, nitrous oxide will be authorized as a “Class C” medication and categorized under British law with anabolic steroids, benzodiazepines, and growth hormones as “the least harmful” medications.
