World leaders advocate using nuclear energy to reduce global warming

Under the shade of a massive monument that glorifies nuclear energy, over 30 world leaders and delegations are endorsing the controversial idea of using the source to help achieve climate neutrality while providing additional economic and security independence to more countries.

Twelve years ago, after the Fukushima nuclear catastrophe in Japan, such a conference would have seemed unimaginable. However, during the last five years, the situation has changed dramatically due to two factors: the necessity to phase out fossil fuels due to global warming and the revelation of Russia’s energy reliance due to the conflict in Ukraine.

Rafael Grossi, the director of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said, “We have to do everything possible to facilitate the contribution of nuclear energy.” It’s obvious: nuclear energy exists. It has a significant role to play, he said. The purpose of the meeting on Thursday was to engage in strategic planning; no concrete results were anticipated.

Gaza assistance and ammunition for Ukraine are major priorities.

Leaders of the European Union convened on Thursday to talk about the conflict in Gaza and explore new approaches to support Ukraine’s increased production of weapons and ammunition. They were very concerned about Israel’s intentions to initiate a ground attack in the city of Rafah. Alongside the leaders, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will promote financing for the UN Palestinian Relief Agency, which is the primary supplier of assistance to Gaza. There are also fresh plans to purchase Ukrainian weapons and ammunition with the proceeds from Russian assets that have been blocked.
