Among the 3 people killed in the UK’s Nottingham knife attacks was an Indian medical student

One of three victims of a frantic wave of knife assaults on the streets of Nottingham in central England, which have stunned the nation, was identified on Wednesday as a young medical student of Indian descent who is also reportedly a gifted hockey and cricket player.

19-year-old cricket player Grace O’Malley Kumar was with 19-year-old Barnaby Webber when the as-yet-unidentified perpetrator is believed to have fatally stabbed the pair early on Tuesday.

According to Nottinghamshire Police, the 31-year-old suspect, who is still in jail, continued by fatally stabbing a man in his 60s and attempting to drive over three patients who were still hospitalized using a vehicle that had been taken from that guy.

“I am certain that everyone in the house would wish to express their gratitude to the emergency services for their continuous assistance after the horrific tragedy in Nottingham yesterday. At the beginning of the House of Commons meeting on Wednesday, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak remarked, “Our sympathies are with those who have been hurt and with the families of those who have lost their lives.

Later, UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman updated Parliament on the “horrific events” and said that it is not currently being considered as a terrorist incident.

“I can assure the House that the police are exerting every effort to gather all the information and help those who are impacted. I can confirm that counter terror police are assisting Nottinghamshire police in their investigations even though they are still keeping an open mind on the motivations behind these assaults. However, this does not imply that it is being handled as a terrorist attack right now, according to Braverman.

The third victim, 60-year-old local school caretaker Ian Coates, was the owner of the van that police believe the suspect stole and used to run down three pedestrians who are still in the hospital. According to the minister, a knife was used in the attacks, two of the victims were students at Nottingham University.

According to a statement from Kate Meynell, Chief Constable of Nottinghamshire Police, “We are keeping a ‘open mind’ and are working with Counter Terrorism Policing to establish the facts – as we would normally do in these types of circumstances.”

She stated, “A committed team of investigators is looking into the circumstances surrounding these accidents and will be gathering information over the next several days.

While the victims have not yet been officially identified by the police, local media sources from Nottingham have provided some information on Grace Kumar, who is the daughter of Dr. Sanjoy Kumar, an Indian-origin doctor who practices in London.

He is being hailed as a “hero” physician after saving the lives of many young stab victims at his neighborhood clinic in 2009. Grace, who was training to become a doctor like him, played hockey for the England under-18s team and was also a gifted cricketer, has received several tributes.

Grace was a beloved sister and daughter who was described in a statement by Kumar’s family as “a truly wonderful and beautiful young lady.”

Grace was James’ dearest friend as well as his sister. He is utterly brokenhearted. As parents, words are completely inadequate to express our absolute sadness. She is going to be terribly missed. We were immensely proud of Grace’s accomplishments and the wonderful person that she was in general. She was strong and smart above her years, according to them.

Grace was considered to be brimming with vitality.

Grace was quite content with her life since she was able to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor while still playing varsity hockey. They went on to say that her devastated extended relatives and friends.

The organization that oversees the sport, England Hockey, also paid homage to her.

In a statement, England Hockey stated, “We are all deeply saddened by the news of the tragic death of Grace Kumar in Nottingham on Tuesday.”

Grace Kumar was said to be a “fiercely competitive, talented, and dedicated cricketer” by the Woodford Wells Cricket Club in Essex.

The “sudden and unexpected death” of two of its students was earlier acknowledged by the University of Nottingham.

“The deaths of two of our students after a significant event in Nottingham city center have shocked and saddened all of us here at Nottingham terribly. I am certain that the whole university community will join me in expressing our sincere sympathies to the deceased’s family, close friends, and the incident’s other victims. In this very trying moment, our thoughts are very much with them all, said Vice-Chancellor Shearer West.

“The university is helping the faculty, students, and family members of the students. In order to assist with the continuing investigation into the event, our security staff collaborates closely with Nottinghamshire Police and the authorities, the spokesperson added.
