After retiring as a judge of the Calcutta High Court, Justice Abhijit Ganguly will join the BJP

Just hours after he resigned as a judge of the Calcutta High Court, Abhijit Ganguly said on Tuesday that he was joining the Bharatiya Janata Party.

According to news agency PTI, he sent his letter of resignation to President Droupadi Murmu, along with copies to Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court TS Sivagnanam.

“Maybe in the afternoon of March 7th. While speaking to journalists in Kolkata, Gangopadhyay said, “There is a tentative program, when I will join BJP.”

“The party will choose whether or not to field candidates for the Lok Sabha. I wanted to get into politics because of the state’s governing party,” Ganguly said.

There have been rumors that Ganguly may run on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket from Bengal’s Tamluk seat in the next Lok Sabha elections. The Trinamool Congress, which has been in power since 2009, has used the Tamluk seat as a stronghold in successive elections.

His decisions on a range of state-wide education-related matters sparked heated political discussions. Ganguly had said that serving the public was what his conscience called him to do.

“I have been working on various issues, particularly those related to education, for the last two or more years. In some cases, a significant amount of corruption has been uncovered. Speaking to ANI on Tuesday, he said, “A lot of significant people in this government’s education sector are currently incarcerated and awaiting trial.”

He stated that he would try to promote the welfare of the people and gave his conscience as the basis for his resignation from the position.

Abhishek Banerjee, the leader of the Trinamool Congress, requested earlier in February that the Supreme Court order Justice Abhijit Ganguly to be held accountable for his alleged “continuous politically motivated interviews” in relation to subjudice cases.
