As the government relocates the last Kuki family to Kangpokpi, Chidambaram declares that Imphal Valley’s “ethnic cleansing” is accomplished

There can be nothing more’shameful’ than this scenario, said senior Congressman P Chidambaram on Sunday, alleging that ‘ethnic cleansing is complete’ in Manipur’s Imphal Valley.

According to a media report cited by the previous home minister, the remaining five Kuki families in Imphal were “forcibly removed” from their houses by the government.

This indicates that the “ethnic cleansing” of the Meitei-dominated Imphal Valley is finished, he said in a post on X.

The central government asserts that the state government is operating in conformity with the Constitution while a state government rule over “ethnic cleansing,” according to Chidambaram.

Nothing could be more repugnant than this development, he remarked.

It is a new low in India’s slide towards anarchy, according to Chidambaram.

Since the ethnic violence in Manipur began in early May as a result of a Tribal Solidarity March organized in the hill regions to oppose the Meitei community’s quest for Scheduled Tribe (ST) designation, more than 160 people have died and hundreds have been wounded.

The majority of Meiteis, who make up around 53% of Manipur’s population, reside in the Imphal Valley. A bit over 40% of the population are the Nagas and Kukis, who live in the hill areas.
