Ashok Chavan Joins BJP, Will Submit Nomination On February 14 For Rajya Sabha Elections

Mumbai: Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday, one day after leaving the Indian National Congress. He was greeted to the party by Devendra Fadnavis, the deputy chief minister. On February 14, Chavan will submit his nomination for the Rajya Sabha. Fadnavis said that Chavan wanted to “work for Vikas” at the former Congress leader’s joining ceremony.

Chavan’s choice to join the BJP represents a “new beginning” for him and a major turn in his political career. Chavan said that the BJP will support efforts to promote Maharashtra’s positive growth. He said in a statement, “I am officially joining the BJP at their headquarters today. I’m hoping that we can collaborate to make good improvements in Maharashtra.

Fadnavis, Ashish Shelar, the head of the Maharashtra BJP, and Chandrashekhar Bawankule were with Chavan.

On Monday, Chavan withdrew from his main membership in the Congress party, prior to his decision to join the BJP.

Ashok Chavan’s political career
From 1986 until 1995, Ashok Chavan served as the Maharashtra Pradesh Youth Congress Committee’s vice president and general secretary.
From 1999 until May 2014, he was a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly for three terms.
From December 8, 2008, until November 9, 2010, he was the Maharashtra State Chief Minister. The Congress Party requested his resignation from office on November 9, 2010, due to accusations of corruption over the Adarsh Housing Society fraud.
Chavan was elected from the Nanded constituency in the general elections of 2014, however he lost the seat to BJP candidate Pratap Patil Chikhalikar in 2019.
He is the third well-known figure to abandon the Maharashtra Congress ship. Former MP for South Mumbai Milind Deora was the first to depart, and then former MLA Baba Siddique.
It has been stated that Chavan, the MLA for Bhokar, Nanded, is at odds with state party president Nana Patole.
