ED official arrested in a fraud case in Tamil Nadu granted provisional bail

Ankit Tiwari, an Enforcement Directorate official, was detained by the Tamil Nadu Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) in December of last year on allegations of bribery. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court granted him interim relief.

However, a two-judge panel led by Justice Surya Kant and included Justice KV Viswanathan declared that Tiwari was not allowed to speak with or have any influence on the case’s witnesses in any way. In announcing the ruling, the supreme court said that Tiwari was required under bail terms to turn over his passport upon request and not leave the country without authorization.

The SC was considering a number of petitions pertaining to DVAC’s bribery case against Tiwari, one of which was an appeal he filed against the Madras High Court’s rejection of his bid for bail.

The ED implored the court to transfer the CBI’s investigation into Tiwari’s bribery case, which is now being investigation by the DVAC. There was no order passed by the SC.

Tiwari and his group of ED inspectors, according to Tamil Nadu authorities, had reportedly been “threatening several people and receiving bribes” in order to close their cases.

According to the DVAC, Tiwari was apprehended “red-handed” after he took a Rs 20 lakh bribe from a doctor in the district of Dindigul.
