Former mayor charges government of “betraying” workers at Domestic Breeding Checker

The head of the opposition in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and a former mayor, Raja Iqbal Singh, has accused the AAP administration of betraying workers at Domestic Breeding Checkers (DBC). He said that rather than protecting their job security, the government’s actions—specifically, the transfer of their roles to Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS)—were putting it in jeopardy.

He denounced the terms and circumstances behind DBC workers’ transfer to MTS roles. “These employees’ jobs should have been regularised without any conditions,” he said. However, the government has made its anti-employee measures a top priority.

He underlined the role played by around 3,000 DBC workers, stating that they risk their lives by going door-to-door to prevent mosquito breeding, particularly in times of emergency like the COVID-19 epidemic.

“The government is breaking its promise to end contractual employment practices, despite their crucial role in providing sanitization services during crises and assisting in quarantine centres,” the speaker said.

“If the anti-employee conditions are not withdrawn, the BJP will take to the streets and raise their voice in the Assembly,” he said, a precursor to possible demonstrations. He added that, under the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, the BJP-led New Delhi Municipal Council has regularised the employment of more than 4,500 workers.

“The employees should get salaries according to the minimum wage rate, equivalent to Level-1 salaries, rather than the proposed lower rates,” he stated, demanding fair remuneration for DBC personnel.
