G20: The government considers other airports since there isn’t enough parking in Delhi for VVIP planes

Since there won’t be enough parking at the two Delhi airports, Indira Gandhi International Airport and the IAF base in Palam, where over 50 special aircraft are anticipated to arrive for the G20 summit next month, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is looking into ways to divert them to other locations.

The two aforementioned airports can now only park roughly 40 aircraft, hence MEA is considering moving the remaining aircraft to Amritsar, Jaipur, Lucknow, and Indore.

Thirteen heads of state or representatives are anticipated to arrive on commercial flights, while 50 VVIP planes are scheduled to land, according to a report from a coordination conference presided over by the MEA’s chief of protocol.

These aircraft’s unique characteristics, such as its configuration, the date, the hour, and so on, will be known later. According to insiders who spoke with IE, the special aircraft will be parked at Bays 1 and 3, which are near to the ceremonial lounge.

The Indian Air Force (IAF), Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Intelligence Bureau, and Customs were present at the conference.

There was even talk of closing one of IGI’s runways and turning it into a parking area. IE reported that the Delhi airport’s authorities insisted that all runways be open for landings during the conference.

The airports in the four cities of Amritsar, Indore, Jaipur, and Lucknow were chosen after a number of options were taken into account.

Since the beginning of this month, the civil aviation ministry has been in communication with all parties involved about moving the grounded aircraft out of Delhi to a neighboring airport.

According to news agency ANI, the civil aviation ministry has been aggressively fixing the Delhi airport’s parking issues in order to make room for the aircrafts.

According to a government source speaking to news agency ANI, there are approximately 70 to 80 planes parked at the Delhi airport for a variety of reasons, including engine replacements and technical problems.

G-20 SUMMARY

On September 9–10, the G20 Leaders’ Summit will take place in the Bharat Mandapam Convention Center, formerly known as Pragati Maidan, among other significant venues.

Security organizations have completed movement exercises and convoy arrangements for visiting heads of state with less than a month to go.

The Delhi Police will reportedly be in charge of providing the exterior security, which would include protection and transportation from the hotel to the site and returning to the hotel.

The VVIP transit from the airport to the hotel, hotel to the venue, back to the hotel, and then to the airport will all be covered by the security exercises.

In order to guarantee that the international conference is conducted in a favorable atmosphere, Delhi Police has already begun its task. All Delhi’s districts’ Deputy Commissioners of Police have been tasked with upholding order and harmony while also keeping a watch out for anti-social elements.

Since taking over the G20 chair on December 1, 2022, India has held a significant number of meetings under the group’s several tracks, which will come to a head at the summit in New Delhi on September 9–10 of this year.
