“Improper presumptions”: India calls the German ambassador in response to comments made over Arvind Kejriwal’s detention

India strongly objected to the comments made by the foreign ministry on Delhi head Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest on Saturday, calling the German deputy head of mission here.

When the German ambassador Georg Enzweiler was called by external affairs ministry officials, they informed him that any “biased assumptions” were “most unwarranted” and that the comments made by the German Foreign Ministry on Kejriwal’s arrest interfered with India’s legal system.

Speaking on behalf of the German Foreign Ministry, Kejriwal’s detention had been “taken note” of.

“We assume and expect that the standards relating to the independence of Judiciary and basic democratic principles will also be applied in this case,” said a German official.

Spokesman for the External issues Ministry Randhir Jaiswal said, “The German deputy chief of mission in New Delhi was summoned today and conveyed India’s strong protest on their Foreign Office spokesperson’s comments on our internal affairs.”

“We see such remarks as interfering in our judicial process and undermining the independence of our judiciary,” he said.

India is a thriving democracy that upholds the rule of law. Law will proceed in this case according to its own rules, just as it does in every other democratic nation. “This account has led to biased assumptions that are completely unfounded,” said Jaiswal.
