Janaushadhi Kendra instructed to just market generic medications

Non-generic medications will no longer be sold at the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya (DDU) Hospital’s Janaushadhi Kendra.

The High Court issued an order recently directing the Janaushadhi Kendra to only supply generic medications. As a result, we have directed Janaushadhi Kendra to only supply generic medications,” said Dr. HR Thakur, DDU’s Medical Superintendent.

By the way, the Janaushadhi Kendra’s mission is to offer solely generic medications so that the underprivileged may get medication at a reasonable cost. But some Kendras also offer branded medications in addition to generics.

Regarding the Janaushadhi Kendra at Civil Hospital, Khaneri, Rampur, the Himachal Pradesh High Court recently issued an order stating that no non-generic medications may be dispensed at the Kendra.

In order to “ensure that no non-generic medicine is sold in the Janaushadhi shop” without authorization, if any, from the Pharma and Medical Bureau of India (PMBI), the High Court requested that the hospital’s Medical Superintendent act.

Non-generic medications are sold in the Janaushadhi shop at the IGMC. “We are authorized to offer certain branded medications at the Janaushadhi shop in addition to generic medications. The hospital’s Rogi Kalyan Samiti has granted the approval. We would cease distributing non-generic medication if the government issues directives to do so, IGMC MS Dr. Rahul Rao said.

According to Rohit Sharma, the state’s PMBI nodal officer, Janaushadhi Kendra is not authorized to offer non-generic medications. He said, “The Janaushadhi Kendras are violating the scheme’s mandate and the memorandum of understanding by selling non-generic medicines.”

Sharma said that while the majority of Janaushadhi Kendras only offered generic medications, a minority of Kendras also offered non-generic medications.

Hospitals that are selling non-generic medications have received notifications from us. PMBI may take action against these Janaushadhi Kendras, including terminating the agreement to operate the Janaushadhi Kendra, if they continue to offer non-generic medications, the official said.
