JU Student Death: Another Arrested; Court Orders Him to Police Custody Until August 24

A municipal court remanded a former Jadavpur University student to police custody till August 24 after he was made the 13th person to be detained in connection with the death of a first-year undergraduate student on Sunday.

The state prosecutor informed reporters that the police had filed a complaint under Section 353 of the IPC (use of criminal force to prevent a public worker from doing his duties) against the accused.

On a request from the prosecution to question the accused, the judge at the Alipore Court ordered police custody of him until August 24.The accused individual and others, according to the prosecution attorney, are accused of obstructing police from speaking to the victim as he was being transported to the hospital and of forcibly locking the hostel’s gates to keep them out.

In conjunction with its investigation into the murder of the undergraduate student, who was reportedly raped and sexually abused, resulting to his death after falling from a second-floor balcony of the main dormitory building, the police had detained three current students of the school on Friday.

Nine JU alumni and current students have previously been detained. They’re all in police custody.  As instructed by the statutory authority, the respected 67-year-old institution has submitted a thorough report to the institution Grants Commission about many inquiries regarding suspected ragging and sexual harassment of the 17-year-old undergraduate student.
