Kejriwal Requests That Opposition Leaders Discuss The Center’s Ordinance Bill On Public Services In Delhi

Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi, has written to non-BJP leaders in a number of states to urge them to seek a debate on the ordinance bill at the Centre before the opposition gathering set for June 23.

“By introducing this legislation, the Centre is testing Delhi. According to a report by PTI, he said in the letter dated June 20 that if it were successful, it would introduce similar ordinances in non-BJP states and take away the authority of states over the topics included on the concurrent list.

Nitish Kumar, the chief minister of Bihar and a leader of the Janata Dal (United), organised the gathering on Friday in Patna to confront Modi and the BJP before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

According to Kejriwal, the meeting’s top priority should be a discussion on how to stop the ordinance Bill, which the Centre in Delhi introduced on May 19 in the Rajya Sabha. The AAP government criticised the move as a ruse in light of the Supreme Court’s decision on control of services. The Centre has adopted an ordinance to establish an authority for the transfer and posting of Group-A employees in Delhi.

Following the ordinance, Kejriwal has been contacting leaders of non-BJP parties to enlist their opposition to the ordinance in order to thwart the Center’s attempt to replace it via a Bill when it is introduced in Parliament.

A day earlier, Kejriwal stated his hope that other parties will push the Congress to clarify its position on the Bill. The AAP chief continued by saying that he will explain to the other conference participants how such an ordinance might be introduced for even fully functional states.

He said, according to PTI, that soon the BJP will be in control of 33 states via Lieutenant Governors.

The ordinance was passed a week after the Supreme Court granted control of Delhi’s services to the elected government, with the exception of police, public order, and land. It sought to establish a National Capital Civil Service Authority to oversee transfers of Group-A officers from the DANICS cadre and disciplinary actions against them. Before the May 11 ruling of the Supreme Court, the lieutenant governor had executive authority over all officer transfers and postings within the Delhi government.
