Mehbooba Mufti requests an early hearing on petitions to revoke Article 370 from the court

Mehbooba Mufti, the president of the PDP, has requested Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud to expedite the hearing of cases in August 2019 that contest the repeal of Article 370. Mehbooba emphasised the significance of Article 370 and reminded the CJI of the people of Jammu and Kashmir’s resolve to preserve the region’s unique status.

Mehbooba’s appeal drew attention to the Supreme Court’s backlog of cases from the previous four years and called attention to the suffering of those being held without charge, especially young people. Along with other parties in Jammu & Kashmir, the PDP has vehemently opposed Article 370’s repeal.

Mehbooba used earlier Supreme Court decisions to back her argument that the Article should only be altered if suggested by the Jammu and Kashmir constitutional assembly, according to media sources. She accused the BJP of repealing Article 370 in an unlawful manner.

Mehbooba reaffirmed in a tweet that Article 370 is a constitutional promise to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, and she expressed optimism that the Chief Justice of India’s presence will bring attention to the region’s urgent problems, such as the denial of basic rights and protections.
