Officers in the Indian Navy may now dress in kurta-pyjamas at meetings

The kurta-pajama combination has just been introduced into the naval messes by the Indian Navy. As per an article in the Times of India, the Navy has permitted officers to don traditional clothing, like kurta-pajamas and sleeveless jackets, along with formal shoes or sandals, while in the mess. This is in accordance with government directives that aim to eradicate colonial-era vestiges and promote indigenous military customs.

Kurta-pyjamas were adopted as a result of talks at the naval commanders’ conference, which was presided over by Admiral R. Hari Kumar. The report highlighted the attire’s acknowledgment as a “national civil dress.”

According to the specifications, the kurta must-have cuff sleeves that fall just above the knee and be a solid color. Additionally, the slender pajamas that go with the pants should contrast or match them. They should have side pockets and an elastic waistline.

Similar guidelines apply to female officers who choose this look, giving them the choice of pairing a kurta with a churidar or a palazzo.

These rules only apply to unofficial or social meetings held in messes and institutions; warships and submarines are not covered by them. at the past, male employees and visitors were not allowed to wear kurta-pyjamas at Navy mess areas, Army facilities, or Indian Air Force institutions.

In accordance with Prime Minister Modi’s order for “freedom from slavery mentality,” the Navy is aggressively eschewing colonial-era methods, although some veterans have expressed concerns. Former chief admiral Arun Prakash said, “It is unnecessary and in poor taste to emphasize the so-called ‘ghulami ki virasat’ as it casts doubt on the post-Independence generations of patriotic Indian Navy personnel.”

The Navy is “Indianising” sailors’ rank titles in addition to changing their clothes.
