On July 7, a Delhi court will rule on whether to accept the chargesheet against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh

The decision on whether to take cognizance of the chargesheet filed by the Delhi police against BJP MP and departing WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in a case of alleged sexual harassment of female wrestlers was postponed by a Delhi court on Tuesday until July 7.

The ruling was due to be given by more Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Harjeet Singh Jaspal on Saturday. He took notice of the city police’s assertion that the investigation is still ongoing and that more charges may be brought.

“However, it could take some time as the FSL report and the report on the CDR (call detail record) are expected. Submitted for review on July 7,” the judge added.

In the case involving Singh, a six-term member of parliament, the city police had submitted a chargesheet on June 15 under sections 354 (Assault or criminal force to a lady with intent to insult her modesty), 354A (sexual harassment), 354D (stalking), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC.

Vinod Tomar, the Wrestling Federation of India’s (WFI) suspended assistant secretary, was also charged with violating IPC sections 354, 354A, 506 (criminal intimidation), and 109 (abetment of any offence, if the act abetted is committed as a result and no express provision is made for its punishment).

In addition to the current case, Singh was the subject of another FIR brought against him in response to claims made by a young wrestler and recorded under the POCSO Act, which protects children from sexual offences. She was one of the seven women wrestlers who had accused Singh of harassing them sexually.

Both FIRs included several claimed incidents of sexual harassment committed by Singh over the course of a decade, including unwanted touching, groping, stalking, and intimidation.

The Delhi Police had submitted a final report in the minor’s case on June 15 asking for the FIR that had been filed about the accusation of sexual harassment against Singh to be withdrawn. In situations when police conduct a thorough investigation but fail to uncover corroborating evidence, a cancellation report is submitted.

On July 4, a POCSO court will probably take into account the cancellation report.

The kid wrestler’s father made the surprising revelation to PTI that they had made a “false” police charge of sexual harassment against Singh because they felt that they had been wronged by the girl.

Two times that Singh has been questioned by the police thus far, he has refuted all of the charges and said he was “framed.”

Famous wrestlers like Asian Games champion Vinesh Phogat and Olympic medalists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik took up the cause of the female competitors. Numerous opposition parties and farmer associations supported the demonstration by famous grapplers.
