PM Modi’s new electoral pitch: outreach to the minority, warning to the majority

As the 18th General Election campaign takes up steam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi provided a distinct form to his new poll appeal only one day after shaking up the opposition ranks with the statement, “Congress will redistribute all your wealth to people with more kids.”

Modi used a two-pronged canvassing strategy on Monday at an Aligarh poll rally in Uttar Pradesh. He warned the majority of people about the “opposition’s plans to survey and usurp everyone’s wealth for redistribution,” while the minority was informed about the government’s pro-Muslim initiatives.

The Prime Minister today made a major outreach to the Muslim community, claiming that the Samajwadi Party and Congress, members of the opposition INDI bloc, “did nothing for the social, political, and economic empowerment of Muslims,” despite once again cautioning the public against “Congress’ prince (read Rahul Gandhi’s) Maoist plan to assess and redistribute people’s wealth and assets to those who don’t have much.”

“The SP and Congress have always engaged in appeasement politics and have not taken any concrete steps to improve the political, social, or economic standing of Muslims. They object to my supporting Pasmanda Muslims because, according to Modi, the wealthy members of their community have reaped the rewards while the Pasmandas have been forced to live in poverty.

Using the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia as a point of reference, Modi contrasted the “appeasement policy” of his opponents with the “Sabka Saath Sabka Vishwas” policy of his government. He also declared that he had democratized the Haj travel system by doing away with the requirement that women travel with a male companion.

According to Modi, the Haj quota has been expanded via constructive relations with Saudi Arabia, making the trip available to all Muslims.

The Prime Minister chose not to make any statements today that were specifically directed at any particular group after saying on Sunday in Banswara, Rajasthan, that the Congress intended to steal people’s wealth and give it to “infiltrators and those that had more children.”

Still, he repeated his Sunday caution.
