Police unravel a jewelry store heist

On Monday, the Division C police said that they had solved the crime that occurred three days earlier outside Gate Hakima here, when a jeweler was robbed of cash at gunpoint. The culprit was named Dashmesh Nagar resident Jagdish Singh, also known as Goldy. The stolen money, toy gun, and scooter used in the crime were found by the police.

The Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Dr. Darpan Ahluwalia, said that the accused was released from custody on March 8th, granted bail. She said that he had committed four theft and snatching incidents at the Division B, Kotwali, and Civil Lines police stations in 2022. He had also plundered a guy in a similar manner two years before, she said, using a toy gun in the Civil Lines police station area.

Jagdish Singh continued to change after robbing the jeweler. He assumed a different name and stayed in the Dashmesh Nagar neighbourhood to evade police searches. Nevertheless, police units were able to identify him after looking through the local CCTV system.

Jeweler Amritpal Singh said that when the accused entered Singh Jewellers, he was seated inside. He had on a mask and “parna,” or hat. He went inside the business, pulled out a handgun, loaded it, and made a shooting threat. At the store at the moment, he was by himself. He made him give up the money. After removing two bundles of cash from the box, he rode out on his outside-parked scooter. The CCTV camera caught the whole affair. Based on Amritpal’s testimony, the police opened a case.

In the meanwhile, the ADCP advised the owners of jewelry stores to bolster security protocols by assigning security guards, installing CCTV cameras with covert DVRs, having enough illumination, motion sensors, and numerous alarm systems, in addition to locking the cash boxes. She said that since the cash box was open during the event, the accused removed the case with ease.
