Rahul Gandhi will be the Opposition’s face in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, according to Congress MP Pradip Bhattacharya

Rahul Gandhi, according to Congress MP Pradip Bhattacharya, will be the Opposition’s face in next year’s Lok Sabha elections.

“Rahul Gandhi is a courageous leader who boldly called out the misdeeds of the Modi government,” the Rajya Sabha MP told ANI on Sunday. The BJP attempted to harass him, but the Supreme Court ruled in his favor in the defamation case. Rahul Gandhi’s leadership will soon usher in a new political chapter. I have no doubt that he will be the face of the opposition in the general election next year.”

Taking a shot at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the senior Congress leader said it was incorrect for him to claim that there had been no progress during his tenure.

“Prime Minister Modi continues repeating that nothing has been done in the previous 70 years. That is just unacceptable. Did Prime Minister Modi go from Gujarat to Delhi in a bullock cart? The nation was in horrible condition when Congress took over administration. It was the Congress that inspired people to believe in their intentions to reconstruct the nation. So, for the PM to suddenly claim that nothing was done under the Congress administration is just false,” Bhattacharya added.

The Congress MP said his party will reject the draft bill to replace the Centre’s Ordinance on the Control of Services in the National Capital, which was introduced in the Rajya Sabha for debate and passage on Monday.

Bhattacharya stated of the Congress’s previous decision to boycott the opening of the new Parliament building, “It should have been done by the President.” Why did the Prime Minister have to dedicate the (new Parliament) building? It was quite unfortunate. The Prime Minister has turned to bad politics. Negative politics will not bring the BJP political success. Why didn’t he (the Prime Minister) convene a Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Rafale (fighter aircraft) deal? He is bashing the opposition unnecessarily. He will lose more if he continues to mistreat us.”

The Congress representative, perhaps echoing the Trinamool Congress’ pet grievance against the Centre, said, “West Bengal should get its share of central funds and a proper account should be kept for all the expenses incurred.”

Notably, the Congress and TMC are allies in the Opposition grouping — I.N.D.I.A — among other parties.
