Tamil Nadu’s British-era statute may be replaced by the Medical Council Act

To replace the Tamil Nadu Medical Registration Act of 1914, the government on Wednesday submitted the Tamil Nadu State Medical Council Bill in the Assembly.

The Tamil Nadu State Medical Council Act, 2024 is one possible name for the Act. Many of the clauses of the 1914 Act, a pre-independence statute passed when the Madras Presidency included wider regions, including portions of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, were out of date. For example, the previous Act required nominated members of the council to come from places that were no longer a part of Tamil Nadu.

The previous president of the Tamil Nadu Medical Council, Dr. K Senthil, praised the measure and expressed hope that the governor will sign it as soon as possible.

Court issues caused a lengthy delay in the Tamil Nadu Medical Council election. In its December 2022 ruling, the Madras High Court upheld the outdated Act and its antiquated regulations, which required a thorough overhaul. It has instructed the administration to think about implementing electoral changes.
