Tennessee government hopes to contain the oil leak in two days

According to those acquainted with the situation, the Tamil Nadu administration intends to contain the oil leak in Ennore within the next two days. This was said on Sunday.

For the last 13 days, locals and fishermen have been impacted by oil leaks in the Buckingham Canal stream region, which were caused by storm Michaung’s severe rains and subsequent floods in the state. The CPCL refinery is situated in the north of Chennai, which is where the leak started.

Monday is the day of the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) next hearing in this matter. Four segments have now been identified as the affected region for evaluation and mitigation. The state administration has said that “each stretch will be taken care of by a dedicated team with the objective to complete the process of mitigation by December 18–19.” An investigation to determine how much oil is combined with water is being conducted by IIT Madras.

Vens Hydra Lifts Private Limited and Neowin India Limited have joined Sea Care Services and Viraj Sea cleaning firms from Mumbai in order to step up the current recovery efforts. Up to 110 vessels and 615 workers are on the scene helping with the oil mitigation efforts.

Five gully suckers, eleven earthmovers, thirteen tippers, five porcelains, one hydra crane, four skimmers, two tractor trailers, and four pick-up trucks are among the equipment used. The state also installed two flushing pumps, two hydro jets for recovery operations, and four jet washers a day ago.

Representatives from the Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL), the location of the alleged oil leak, as well as others impacted, including the local population and fishermen, have created a committee. Additionally, the oil that seeped into people’s houses is being cleaned in places including Mugathuvara, Ennore, Nettukuppam, and Kattukuppam.

According to a government official, more than 276 barrels totaling 48.6 tonnes of oil waste have been recovered so far, holding around 15 tonnes of oil.

The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has come to the conclusion that there is enough evidence that oil from CPCL has seeped into the Buckingham Canal, eventually reaching Ennore Creek, as a result of insufficient stormwater management and stormwater storage ponds. Cyclone Michaung is said to have hit Chennai on December 4, bringing with it heavy rains and drowning the city. In addition, the board reported to the NGT last week that Toshiba-JSW, an industrial company, was being investigated for improperly handling waste oil, which may have resulted in a discharge into the Buckingham Canal.
